140x80cm Chinese Round off white rug (CHI103)
Chinese
In Xinjiang, carpet weaving is an age-old traditional craft requiring superb skill to
create carpets that are famous all over the world. Hotan County, renowned for
its jade, is also the home of Xinjiang's carpet-weaving trade. For anyone sauntering
along the streets of Hotan's towns, the most spectacular goods on display are the
gorgeous elaborate carpets.
Carpet weaving techniques from Xinjiang were also introduced to China along with
carpets, and served to stimulate interest in carpet making, so that by the time of the
Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), carpets were commonly produced in many regions
throughout China.
Chinese handmade rugs were essentially ornamental, for those of high stature and
wealth who could afford to purchase them or have them made. Chinese designs
differed as well in that they were largely symbolic, influenced by Buddhist, Taoist
, and Confucian thought.
They have kept their original designs but have changed their motifs to something a
little more modern to keep with the fashion in today’s society, such motifs are
dragons & flowers.
This one is tightly woven and durable as well as being decorative and beautiful. They
usually are a shade of red in color and have floral patterns.
