The term Mahal is used to describe the carpets from this region that are of medium quality in terms of weave and knot counts. Although the term dose not refers to a village or province, it is probably derived from “Mahallat”, a village located in the south of the ARAK region.
Although Mahal carpets are of average quality, it is worth remembering that the price of a carpet is not determined by its knot count only and that colour and design are of greater significance.
The regions of Mahal have a long tradition of weaving carpets, which goes back for few centuries, but it is only from the late 19th century that this region became very famous for their decorative carpets.
This one is woven with good quality wool and is hard wearing as well as being decorative and beautiful. Mahal do however copy more famous rugs in Iran some of which are Kashan Sarouk and Mashad, which all have similar traits.
