Malayer is a city in western Iran, located in the Zagros Mountains of the Hamedan province. A trade centre for the many agricultural villages of south-eastern Hamedan and a small-scale manufacturing centre noted for its production of carpets.
In the city of Malayer, carpet weaving is very popular and has a good market. The designs, especially the older ones, which are very common in Malayer, are more or less similar to those made in the Arak region such as Sarugh and Farahan. Some carpets of this region are famous by the name of “Armani-baft” that have the same design as the Caucasian carpets. The ancestors of these weavers had emigrated from the Caucasus and Armenia in the 17 century, therefore all the carpets woven in Malayer and its surrounding villages are in stylised patterns, mostly in medallion and Herati design with undertones of primitive persian designs and patterns.
