Located in north-eastern Iran, Mashad is the capital of the Khorasan province and an important center of the carpet weaving industry. It is also considered the most holy city of Iran, because it houses the shrine of Imam Reza who is very dear to Muslims around the world. Mashad carpets have elegant medallions on floral fields, with colour schemes of red or blue. They sometimes copy classic Kashan patterns, and sometimes all-over Herati details which may be marketed as Khorassan.

Mashad is known for producing some of the best wool in Iran. Their rugs and carpets are very high quality and are among the best looking carpets in Iran and the world. compromising rugs that are mainly dark red, blue, and khaki, Mashad rugs and carpets are mostly curvilinear with a single central medallion, corner floral designs, and very busy curvilinear floral motifs in the background.
