Many Afghanistan weavings are dark but the darkest of all is the Mushwanee (Mushwani). It is neither clear that the Mushwanee are neither ethnically nor linguistically Afghanistan.
These types of rugs are very special indeed, there is nothing like this in any country in the world, they were woven out of circumstance and not by tradition, they originated in Baluchestan where Afghanistan’s travelled and brought Kilim and Sumak techniques back with them.
The combinations of rugs woven onto Sumak with Kilim is something to be sort after, they started out with weft float brocading, to weave the Sumak, then Kilim at the end to tighten the fringe ends, they finish by weaving the rug pile through the imprint in the Sumak to give depth to the rug, a true original piece.
