India - Agra
A large city and weaving district in North Central India that has been prolific in producing tightly knotted, decorative, floral rugs. These design motifs have been handed down from generation to generation and these famous old patterns are highly reproduced today.
In point of size and thickness the Agra carpets of today are fit successors to those of the olden time. They are of enormous weight and solidity. The designs are similar to those common in the time of Mongol ascendancy, the cone forms playing an important part. For a long time after the establishment of the weaving in the industrial school, the carpets were nearly all in a monotone of two colours, green or blue, with pale cream colour. More recently the use of browns and purples was begun. The central field in the latter rugs presents an angular form of some Mohammedan device, and the border, very often, the transverse arrangement of the pear shape spoken of as being a feature of certain Khorassan.
