Mood
Mood rugs are hand woven in the city of Mashad in the Province of
Khorassan. This great weaving center is also a trade center for the rugs
produced in the neighbouring towns and villages. You may notice that
Mood rugs have some characteristics that are similar to a rug produced
in Birjand. Although most are woven in workshops in the city, it is
possible to find occasional Mood rugs that have been woven on a home
loom. Skilled artisans use the asymmetrical Persian knot in the creation
of this very special carpet as it offers more precision when weaving the
intricately detailed patterns.
Mood rugs are well known for curvilinear patterns with a single
sunflower shaped center medallion that is both unique and strikingly
beautiful. There are several other classic patterns closely associated
with Mood rugs as well. The Mahi or Herati and Boteh designs in an all-
over layout or with a star shaped central medallion are very frequently
used. Another is the garden or field design on Mood rugs which
illustrates a stylized garden. Mood rugs feature beiges, browns, reds,
and blues, with ivory providing the contrast. The colours are made from
natural vegetable dyes.
The warps on Mood rugs are mostly cotton, while the wefts are either
cotton or wool and consist of a usually thick pile. Silk may be used in
certain areas of Mood rugs in order to emphasize a part of the design.
Although they are available in a wide variety of sizes, Mood rugs are
most commonly midsize to large. Prized by collectors and aficionados
all over the world for its superb quality and great beauty.
